Spending Public Money on the 2011 Rugby World Cup

The 2011 Rugby World Cup will be a wonderful event for Auckland City and we need to do the work to make sure the event is a true success. City Vision is very much in favour of getting going with the infrastructure development work needed in Kingsland and Sandringham to support the big event.

We have to make it easier and safer for people to move to and from Eden Park by public transport and on foot and so Council is consulting with local residents and business operators about a Precinct Plan. This will identify the work needed to improve the local road and footpath network to cope with the additional traffic.

There are other improvements that will have a long term benefit to the neighbourhood and we should take advantage of the World Cup to have these done. Council needs to work with Vector to have the power lines undergrounded and to follow that with footpath restoration. The Morningside station needs to be upgraded, and the pedestrian access from that station to Eden Park improved. Sandringham Rd needs to be re-aligned to enable the widening of the platforms at the Kingsland rail station and the improvement of the Sandringham Rd/Walters Rd intersection which has been the subject of complaints for years. That will be money well spent.  City Vision Eden-Albert councillors, Neil Abel, Cathy Casey and Glenday Fryer successfully moved at Council that none of this money be wasted on pursuing any idea of an expensive bridge or tunnel across Sandringham Road.
