Voting For Your Communities' Future

City Vision Media Release, 24 September 2007
The Herald section on the Auckland City local body elections is a welcome coverage of issues and policies. The emphasis on Council tickets rather than just the mayoral contest is key because the mayor has only one vote in Council.
Votes in all wards decide who controls City Hall - not just Hobson and Eden-Albert. People must vote across Auckland to say no to community and infrastructure neglect through years of the ‘do nothing' policies of Citizens and Ratepayers (C&R).
Only by cutting community services, neglecting parks and open spaces, and ignoring transport demands can C&R promise to hold rates to the level of inflation Today's Herald says C&R's David Hay would can the long overdue provision of pools in Avondale and Otahuhu, probably the enhancement to the Wesley Community Centre and the proposed youth centre in Avondale-Roskill Ward. And that's just the start. What's next - slash and burn across the city?
John Banks, C&R's mayoral choice, wants to turn Auckland back to the white, male, conservative, business dominated city of the 19th and 20th centuries. But he can't do it on his own he needs the votes of C&R councillors. It is vital that voters turn out to reject the failed policies of C&R and choose the City Vision/Labour ticket to continue building a diverse, progressive, caring, green city.
And John Banks? He is just yesterday's man.
