Mountain bike trails get the go-ahead at Arch Hill Scenic Reserve

Auckland City Council plans to develop mountain bike trails at Arch Hill Scenic Reserve in Grey Lynn, in association with the Auckland Mountain Bike Club (AMBC). The plans were approved at today's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee meeting. Chairperson of the committee, Councillor Penny Sefuiva, says that the increasing popularity of mountain biking means it is important to have a dedicated facility within the city.

14 August 2007 Showing initiative with waste

Auckland City Council's waste minimisation efforts are producing great results according to a report to the Works and Services Committee yesterday. Councillor Neil Abel, chairperson of the Works and Services Committee, says the council has been working with 170 primary, intermediate and secondary schools on initiatives to educate students about reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill.

Help for the homeless

Auckland City Council is continuing with its ongoing work to help improve the lives of the city's homeless with a further $25,000 grant to fund an outreach service. The outreach service is an after-hours mobile service that was established as part of the council's Homeless Action Plan. The service was introduced earlier this year and is a partnership between the council, the Auckland City Mission, the Methodist Mission Northern and the Salvation Army.

Rosey future for business precinct

Auckland City Council's Economic Development and Sustainable Business Committee has approved for consultation a draft plan aimed at promoting growth in the Rosebank business precinct and helping provide an extra 10,000 jobs in the area by 2030. The draft plan - called Rosebank 2030 - provides the framework to support the renewal and ongoing development of the precinct. The Rosebank peninsula is one of Auckland's most important dedicated business areas and its 780 businesses currently provide around 8500 jobs. Committee chairperson Councillor Richard Northey says that the Rosebank business precinct makes a significant contribution to the city's economy and that the time is right to support the area's development.

Arts focus confirmed for major city park

The Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee has endorsed a masterplan to develop Monte Cecilia Park as a significant city park with an arts focus. The decision follows public consultation on the draft masterplan developed by Auckland City Council for the 12.3ha Hillsborough park. Following a public exhibition and stakeholder presentations, more than 100 feedback forms were received in response to the draft masterplan, with the majority supporting the approach outlined.
