Council candidate Cathy Casey says her Scottish accent is an excellent icebreaker on the doorsteps of Albert Eden Roskill Ward where she has been canvassing for votes for the last three months. "People love my Scottish accent. It seems like everyone I meet has a Scottish connection and there is a tremendous warmth towards the Scots. I am always very happy to talk about things Scottish like Robert Burns, Billy Connolly or single malts."
Cathy doesn't just recite and sing the poems and songs of Robert Burns she is quite the Burns scholar She also has a set of bagpipes which she says she plays "like a scalded cat".
At a picnic in the Auckland Domain last year to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Cathy was honoured by being asked to give the opening address which left John Banks to bring up the rear. Cathy says she also felt very privileged when she was asked to lead the piping in the haggis - an honour that is traditionally reserved for a man.
