Waitemata and Gulf Ward

On the mainland the Waitemata and Gulf Ward extends from Meola Reef in the west to Hobson Bay in the east including all the CBD and the inner city suburbs of Western Springs, Westmere, Ponsonby, Grey Lynn, St Mary's Bay, Herne Bay, Freeman's Bay, Arch Hill, Newton, Eden Terrace, Grafton, Newmarket and Parnell.

All the Gulf Islands including Great Barrier and Waiheke are part of the Ward.

Mike Lee, stood on his record of leadership, experience and results.

Chairman of the Transport Committee and Board Member of Auckland Transport.

Mike is an acknowledged senior leader on the governing body of Auckland Council and leaves people in no doubt where he stands.

A committed environmentalist and heritage defender, Mike has consistently stood up for the best interests of the people of Auckland. Opposing moves to privatise our port, arguing against the sacking of union workers in the dispute and the pokies for convention centre deal. He is the Council's leading proponent of public transport and the need to progress the City Rail Link.

A strong advocate for the people of Waitemata and Auckland, Mike is continuing his proud record of public service in our city.

Mike Lee's 2010 election profile:

Chairman Auckland Regional Council, 2004-2010. Former ship's officer and passionate conservationist. Lived and worked in the ward most of his life.

Key achievements: capped ARC rates increases; brought back 100% public ownership of Ports of Auckland; acquired new coastal regional parks, including future headland park at Wynyard Point; opened Queens Wharf; and protected natural and built heritage.

Mike has fought to improve public transport and persuaded Government to electrify rail. Under Mike's leadership rail patronage increased from 2.5 million to nearly 9 million trips per year. Advocates CBD loop and rail to airport. Mike will fight to ensure the Auckland Council controls costs and rates and is more accountable to ratepayers. Mike is supporting City Vision candidates for the Waitemata Local Board.

Mike Lee has a track record of public service and delivering on his commitments:

Fighting for public ownership. Mike saved the Ports from privatisation in the 1990s.

As ARC Chair Mike managed public finances responsibly and capped rates increases.
Mike has achieved a major expansion of our Regional Parks and has led efforts to open up our waterfront to the people of Auckland.
A champion of public transport, Mike won government funding for Auckland's rail electrification.
